The Blue Ridge Parkway has held a special place in my heart since high school when a friend drove me around looking for some spots to take photos. I was immediately drawn to its peaceful overlooks and endless stretches of mountain views. In recent years, photographing along the Parkway has rekindled my love for it in a whole new way. Every trip gives me inspiration and it has become one of my favorite places to capture both personal and client sessions.
So, what is the Blue Ridge Parkway?
The parkway is a scenic drive that goes from Virginia to North Carolina, covering many, many beautiful landscapes. It connects Shenandoah National Park to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Where are the best spots for photos on the parkway?
The landscapes and backdrops make the parkway a dream for photographers. Whether you’re planning a family session, an engagement shoot, or just want to take your camera out for fun, here are a few of my favorite spots near Floyd, VA:
- Any of the overlooks: Perfect for sweeping views of the mountains, especially at sunrise or sunset.
- Mabry Mill: One of the most photographed spots on the Parkway, this historic gristmill is beautiful year-round, but especially in the fall when the leaves turn. There is also a restaurant!
- Roadside Pull-Offs: Some of the most beautiful places aren't even meant to be a "view." There are beautiful fields and forests the entire drive.
- Camping Grounds & Trails: Ideal for lifestyle sessions or adventurous couples who want their photos to reflect their love of the outdoors.
Why should I do my photos on the Parkway?
My #1 reason for taking your photos on the parkway is simply the drive you get to take to and from your shoot. It is absolutely breathtaking and honestly life changing for some of the people I have photographed there. One of the most amazing stories from my photography actually comes from the parkway. A few months after a normal couples session, the man messaged me asking if I would be able to photograph their proposal at the same overlook! I wore all black and hid behind a bush (I looked crazy LOL), and got to witness one of the most beautiful moments I have ever been able to see. Now, a year later, I am going to photograph their elopement, at the SAME SPOT! Like, isn't that amazing?! If that doesn't make you want to visit the parkway, I don't know that anything will.
